Castle Hill - Budapest

Buda Castle (Budavári Palota) is the historical castle and palace complex of the Hungarian kings in Budapest. It was first completed in 1265, but the massive Baroque palace today occupying most of the site was built between 1749 and 1769. The castle now houses the Hungarian National Gallery and The Budapest History Museum.

Buda Castle sits on the southern tip of Castle Hill (Várhegy), surrounded by the touristic area known as Castle Quarter (Várnegyed). It is possible to climb the Castle Hill on foot, or by using the Hill Funicular (Budavári Sikló), which transports tourists up and down.

The Church of the Assumption of the Buda Castle (Nagyboldogasszony-templom), more commonly known as the Matthias Church (Mátyás-templom), is a Roman Catholic church located in the Holy Trinity Square, in front of the Fisherman's Bastion, at the heart of Buda's Castle District.

Fisherman's Bastion (Halászbástya) was built in the late 1800s and is one of the best known monuments in Budapest, located near the Buda Castle. It is one of the most important tourist attractions, with unique panorama of the city from the Neo-Romanesque lookout terraces. The monument has seven turrets representing the seven Magyar tribes that dominated the region in the 900s.
